Road Constructio Image
*** Work has officially started ***

Attn Residents:  The McKees Rocks Bridge Preservation Project has officially begun, as of late evening 09/13/22.  Please expect traffic delays and allow yourself extra time to navigate through the closure(s) and  posted detour(s).  Below is information provided by the Department of Transportation. There is also a link below to view the proposed traffic control maps throughout the project.

Project Scope:  The project's scope of work consists of sidewalk repair/replacement, full-depth concrete pavement reconstruction of the roadway & ramps at Helen Street, approach pavement work at the intersections of SR 51 & SR 65, concrete barrier & deck repair, painting of pedestrian railing & steel repair areas, and miscellaneous construction.

Limits:  Project limits extend from SR 51 Island Avenue to SR 65 Ohio River Boulevard.

Timeframes:  Construction is anticipated to begin in September 2022 and conclude in the fall of 2024.

Traffic Control & Detour Summary:  At least one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained on SR 3104 throughout construction, with occasional ramp and turning-movement detours via the West End Bridge during traffic control phases III-A, III-B, and IV. Detours for Phases III-A and III-B (Helen Street ramp closures) are anticipated to occur in 2023 and 2024 respectively, and last approximately 2 months each. Phases III-A & III-B will not occur simultaneously, so that at least one on and off ramp remain open to detour traffic to SR 65 or SR 51 and the West End Bridge. Detours for Phase IV are anticipated to occur in 2024 and last approximately 1½ months. Phase IV will require detours via the West End Bridge for trucks looking to make a right-hand turn onto the bridge from SR 65 Southbound due to barrier-restricted turning radiuses, and for bridge traffic looking to travel straight towards Brighton Heights or turn left onto SR 65 Northbound, while approach pavement in the left-turn and center lane at SR 65 is replaced. Please see anticipated traffic control phasing in the project information presentation for additional detail.  Also, please note that detour dates and timeframes are subject to change depending on the contractor’s schedule.

Future Project Note:  This preservation project is to address the most critical maintenance needs of the McKees Rocks Bridge and adjacent concrete roadway pavement.  Planning has begun for a future rehabilitation project on the McKees Rocks Bridge that will include full superstructure painting and address future maintenance needs.
